One break is all The Crow Brothers need and we’re about to get it.

Johnny Outlaw, rock legend and lead singer of The Resistance, is here to watch us play. But he’s not the only familiar face in the crowd-killer little body, heart-shaped face, and drop-dead gorgeous.

Hannah Nichols sitting at the bar makes it hard to concentrate, sparks already reigniting. The beauty was never a groupie and tonight she’s not here to catch our show. She came to drop a bomb. “You have a son.”

She underestimated me. I’ll prove to my son, and her, that I can be the dad he needs.

What is it about musicians? Why are they so damn sexy?

My heart was Jet Crow’s the moment he opened his sexy mouth and sang that first song. One stolen night with that man would never be enough, but I’m not here to fall into his bed. Again. I’m here to fight for custody of a son he’s never known.

There’s just one problem. Those sparks between us have become flames. If we’re not careful we’re both going to get burned.

Henry has been a prince his entire life but for one wild wedding he wants to be nothing more than an “Average Joe”, or in this instance, “Average Hank”. Excerpt

He lifted his head and when his gaze met hers, he smiled. Shy and sexy all at once, Cassie knew without question it was the sort of smile that meant nothing but trouble. The kind that got him whatever he wanted. The kind that was absolutely irresistible.

And as if that wasn’t enough, he had the whole sexy accent thing going for him.

The stranger leaned closer, close enough for her to smell the faint scent of his soap. It was clean and yet a little spicy and made her want to lick his neck. Because yeah, that was something a perfectly sane woman would do.

The energy between them crackled with anticipation. Then again, maybe it was all in her head. Maybe she’d finally read one too many romance novels and her brain was permanently rewired to think every handsome stranger had the potential to be Mr. Right. Or at the very least, Mr. Right Now.

A beat of silence ticked between them offering her the perfect opportunity to play it safe, to explain what she actually meant and end the whole matter with an awkward laugh. But this handsome stranger had awakened something deep inside her and for once in her life Cassandra Miller didn’t feel like playing it safe. Instead she felt wild and reckless, and the last thing she wanted was to end the moment in any way at all. In fact, she wanted to prolong it, to suspend it in time like something from The Matrix. Then maybe she could even step back and watch from all angles because holy hell, this gorgeous stranger was going to kiss her. Right there. In the shop. With her hair up in a messy bun and flour and dough all over her hands. And what’s more, she was going to let him. So instead of playing it safe, Cassie lifted her chin just as he dipped his head and then . . . .

BFF K’s Review of Icing on the Cake

Fun, sweet and beyond the standard trope of the Royal Romance, I loved Icing on the Cake and think this is Ann Marie Walker’s best story to date! The tale is charming and lol-funny and definitely one to add to your TBR!

Cassie and Henry are sweet characters. It’s so easy to invest in their happiness; and also to see that their greatest happiness comes when they’re together! Henry is anything but an “average Hank” and a name change certainly can’t mask his darling smirk and roguish charm. Cassie is drawn to him in a way she’s never been attracted to another man; and he feels exactly the same about her. In so many ways they’re able to be their true, authentic selves with one another. Even if Hank isn’t completely on the up and up.

I know that I’m not the only one counting down the days until Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will tie the Royal Knot. (110 days at the time this review posts live!) There’s something about a royal love story. Particularly when the heroine is a commoner AND an American – SWOON! If you’re patiently biding your time until the Royal-I-Do’s, Icing on the Cake is the perfect way to pass the time!

I think you’ll love Cassie and Hank’s story and cheer for their HEA! You should definitely one-click this one TODAY!

BFF K’s Review of The Art of Us

The Art of Us is a breath of fresh air! It’s a unique, original story that exposes the reader to a whole new world through well developed and engaging characters. This is a story that should not be missed!

Lena is strong and independent. She’s reluctant to let others in or share any vulnerabilities that may expose her to unhappiness or heartbreak. Even when it comes to her co-worker and secret crush Amos.

Amos is drawn to Lena, but frustrated that she won’t give him the time of day! He patiently bides his time chipping away at her rough exterior. When he finds opportunities to deepen their relationship – he takes them!

The world of comics/manga/animation was a whole new ball game for me, but I loved it! I had so many questions, I requested an interview with the author! This book is about travel, opening yourself to new experiences and relationships, working hard and living a full life. Amos and Lena are a wonderful couple and their journey is incredibly fulfilling.

The Art of Us is full of surprises, some angst, a little steam, big heart and a whole lot of hope. You’ll fall in love with Amos right alongside Lena. I strongly recommend this unique and endearing story!

That’s What She Said Exclusive Interview with Hilaria Alexander

When BFF K finished The Art of Us, she immediately had to know more about the story and the world created in the story! We hope you’ll enjoy this sneak peek behind the scenes of The Art of Us!

BFF K: This book was so detailed and in a world that was completely foreign to me (manga/cartoon) how much research did you have to do? Is this something you enjoy? Where should a newbie start if they want to check some of this out?

HA: I grew up in Italy and I’m an eighties child. When I was a kid, Japanese anime were extremely popular. I watched tons of robot-sagas like Voltron and lots of “magical girl anime” by Studio Pierrot like Creamy Mami and Magical Girl Emi. The heroine was usually a young teen who was in possession of a magic wand and could transform into an older girl, kind of like Erica Raymond becomes Jem from Jem and the Holograms. When I was in high school, I watched the anime version of Marmalade Boy by Wataru Yoshizumi and Neighborhood Story by Ai Yazawa before I even read the comics. Later, I decided to start studying Japanese and as my love for Japanese culture grew, so did my interest for manga (Japanese comics).  Some of my favorites were Slam Dunk by Takehiko Inoue, centered about a young greaser/gang leader who starts playing basketball to win the heart of the girl he loves, and Neighborhood Story by Ai Yazawa. If you’d like to check out some manga, I would suggest picking up Shojo Beat by Viz Media or checking out their site. Most popular anime series started out as a manga. Sailor Moon (Naoko Takeuchi), Inuyasha (Rumiko Takahashi), Vagabond (Takehiko Inoue), are all great series that started as a manga.

BFF K: I know you spent time in Japan in college. How much of this experience made an appearance in The Art of Us?

HA: Some details are definitely taken from my experience overseas. I don’t have a lot in common with the heroine of my story besides the fact that she was also an exchange student and lived for a time in Japan with her best friend. The house were Lena and Maggie lived is an accurate description of the house where my best friend and I lived. It was within walking distance from Shibuya, one of the busiest districts, but it was far from glamourous. However, I did love that little neighborhood a lot. The places described in the novel are places I traveled to – there was so much more I wanted to include. The story about Lena never seeing Mount Fuji or the one about the old lady from the hostel in Nikko are things that happened to me in real life.

BFF K: Tell is about the unfinished manga IRL that inspired this story.

HA: It’s called Nana and it’s by Ai Yazawa. She is hands down my favorite artist. Her style is so unique, and her stories are beautifully crafted. Nana is about two best friends, Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki, who meet on the train to Tokyo and end up sharing an apartment by accident. The first volume came out in Japan in 2001 – just when I started my year there as an exchange student – but nothing new has been published since 2009. The manga is on indefinite hiatus. Ai Yazawa was ill for a while, and then there were rumors she was well enough to go back to work. However, nothing new has been published and no one knows what’s the author’s ailment or if the story will ever be completed. It’s the BIGGEST cliffhanger of my life – I believe the millions of people who read this manga will agree. Even if it’s incomplete, I highly recommend it.

These are “adult” manga and they are just as addictive as romance novels.

BFF K: Lena’s relationship with Rika-san was so lovely. What inspired that relationship? Do you have a mentor like that for your writing?

HA: I have a lot of women who inspire me to be a better writer and better human in general, but I don’t have a mentor quite like Rika-san – I just tried to imagine how I would feel if I found myself in that kind of position. I think Lena’s reluctance to go to Japan at first was really because she didn’t want to disrespect her idol. She loved her too much and didn’t want to “humiliate” her like that.

BFF K: I’ve seen your Pinterest boards but for those who haven’t, tell us about your inspirations for Lena and Amos.

HA: Ahhhhh! I love Pinterest. I don’t always have a clear visual of my characters, so Pinterest helps. My inspiration for Lena is Marion Cotillard – I think I had a hard time picturing Lena at first. I have been thinking about writing this book for the last two years and since the beginning I always had a very strong idea of her personality more than her looks. Marion Cotillard embodies in movies quite often those traits that made Lena who she was: strong, yet extremely fragile, feminine, but with an edge. My inspiration for Amos is Adam Driver. When I imagined Amos I thought of someone who had to be solid, strong, comfortable with who he was. He needed to be strong and patient enough to carry Lena’s pain and her insecurities. Coincidentally, the name Amos means brave. I know not everyone finds Adam Driver attractive – but he’s a fantastic actor and I’ve liked him since I first saw him on Girls. I might be biased, but I find his character on Star Wars one of the most compelling villains ever.

BFF K: I LOVED the cameo from Amira Farouk from Lost in Scotland! Will Amira be getting her own story?

HA: Maybe someday. Never say never. I would like everyone to get their own story, but time is against me. I would really like to write about Amos’ sister Charleigh. I’m dying to write a book set in the kitchen of a restaurant.

RAPID FIRE with Hilaria Alexander

Review – Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this funny and poignant coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class—one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community.

Three years ago, Tanner Scott’s family relocated from California to Utah, a move that nudged the bisexual teen temporarily back into the closet. Now, with one semester of high school to go, and no obstacles between him and out-of-state college freedom, Tanner plans to coast through his remaining classes and clear out of Utah.

But when his best friend Autumn dares him to take Provo High’s prestigious Seminar—where honor roll students diligently toil to draft a book in a semester—Tanner can’t resist going against his better judgment and having a go, if only to prove to Autumn how silly the whole thing is. Writing a book in four months sounds simple. Four months is an eternity.

It turns out, Tanner is only partly right: four months is a long time. After all, it takes only one second for him to notice Sebastian Brother, the Mormon prodigy who sold his own Seminar novel the year before and who now mentors the class. And it takes less than a month for Tanner to fall completely in love with him.

BFF K’s Review of Autoboyography

Autoboyography is my most thought about and talked about book of the year! I absolutely can’t stop raving about it! Christina Lauren has delivered another incredible story. But, this one rises above even their usual brilliance. It is a sweet, smart, heartwarming and heartbreaking story of young love. But, it is also a captivating social commentary and thought provoking look into the lives and struggles of two not-straight young men growing up in areas where they can not truly be themselves.

Tanner is smart and sensitive. He is surrounded by a loving family and supported by good friends, but there are still parts of himself that he keeps hidden. Sebastian is also smart and caring, and similarly, he has grown up with a great deal of love and support. But, Sebastian is also prohibited from revealing who he truly is. The push and pull and angst-filled journey is exposed in a book within a book. It will grab your heart in a vice and squeeze it so so tightly!

I can’t describe how much I LOVE this book. I have told everyone who will listen how great it is. I’ve bought copies for friends and family. I love the written copy and the audio version. I warn you…I don’t believe you can not read this book and come out unscathed. It will carve it’s lines in your head and your heart and you’ll look at the world just a little differently when you’re done. Without a doubt, this is one of my Besties of 2017, worthy of a 6-rated review and you won’t regret a minute you spend with this compelling novel.

Quick Review – Roomies by Christina Lauren

From subway to Broadway to happily ever after. Modern love in all its thrill, hilarity, and uncertainty has never been so compulsively readable as in New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Christina Lauren’s (Beautiful Bastard, Dating You / Hating You) new romance.

Marriages of convenience are so…inconvenient.

For months Holland Bakker has invented excuses to descend into the subway station near her apartment, drawn to the captivating music performed by her street musician crush. Lacking the nerve to actually talk to the gorgeous stranger, fate steps in one night in the form of a drunken attacker. Calvin Mcloughlin rescues her, but quickly disappears when the police start asking questions.

Using the only resource she has to pay the brilliant musician back, Holland gets Calvin an audition with her uncle, Broadway’s hottest musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway—until his reason for disappearing earlier becomes clear: he’s in the country illegally, his student visa having expired years ago.

Seeing that her uncle needs Calvin as much as Calvin needs him, a wild idea takes hold of her. Impulsively, she marries the Irishman, her infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves and Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway—in the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting—will Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

BFF K’s Quick Review of Roomies

Christina Lauren consistently delivers incredible books. They’re full of heart and humor, clever and charming characters and heartwarming storylines. Roomies proves the consistency of this rule! Holland and Calvin are each searching for their own fulfillment. They want to lead meaningful and enjoyable lives, but they’re both a little stuck for a variety of reasons.

They come together in a marriage of convenience that quickly becomes a marriage of love and mutual adoration. Their journey to discover themselves and discover each other is absolutely delightful. This was a combo read and listen and both were equally compelling. This title comes with a little higher price point, but it’s worth every penny!

Determined to satisfy him, she partners with Trinity Distillery to access a larger male audience. Ava Grace and Beck try to keep their intoxicating relationship private, but the glare of her fame is too bright, revealing secrets they both want to remain hidden. I think that Jenna Sutton is one of the most overlooked authors in the Romance genre! I have absolutely LOVED every book of hers that I’ve read. Her characters are delightful and well developed. Her stories are well written and emotionally charged. I smile and swoon and even tear up a little every time I get lost in one of her books. Barreled Over is another great example of her terrific work!

Ava Grace is a country music star, but she’s also a friend and a daughter and a really wonderful, down-to-earth woman. To appease the new leadership at her record label, she agrees to an endorsement deal with an up and coming bourbon company. Jonah Beck is one of the owners of Trinity Distillery and a good man with a fractured past. He is drawn to Ava Grace, but reluctant to pursue her until he just can’t resist anymore. Both characters are struggling with their pasts and trying to build solid futures. It ends up that they’re just about perfect for each other.

I enjoy a book where every character has likeable features. Since this is the start of a series, there are lots of new characters introduced and they’re all interesting and enjoyable. I loved Ava Grace and Beck and I can’t wait for the next book in the Trinity series! I recommend Barreled Over or any of the other great books by Jenna Sutton!

BFF K’s Review of Wingmen Babypalooza

Babypalooza is a happy, mirth-filled, joy-inducing look into the lives of some of my most favorite characters! This short story takes us back to Whidbey at my favorite time of year. This holiday finds Tom, John AND Dan all expecting new babies. And Tom’s take on this new stage in life is absolutely hilarious!

It is so much fun to see each of the Wingmen coming into their own and finding happiness with the incredible women in their lives. Adding to that happiness with new babies is almost too much. The story is sweet and sentimental, but still true to Tom Cat’s irreverent and hilarious sense of humor. I love each of them even more with every book and short story.

If you’ve read the Wingmen series, this short-story will give you all the Christmas-and-baby-feels! If you haven’t read the Wingmen, I don’t know what you’re waiting for. This is still one of my all-time favorite series full of a wonderful cast of characters that just keeps growing!

Don’t miss out on Babypalooza! Grab a glass of eggnog and curl up to enjoy the mayhem!
