Review – The Accidental Assassin by Nichole Chase

Ava McKenzie is a creature of habit. Life is passing her by and she has nothing to show for it. She’s had the same job since she started college, she orders the same dish every time she goes to her favorite restaurant, and only reads books from authors she knows. There is nothing new or surprising in her life… until her best friend marries a man from London. When her newlywed friend asks her to house-sit while she honeymoons, Ava jumps at the chance. She thinks this could be the very thing she needs to shake up her life. Ava throws herself head first into her new lifestyle; she wants to try everything, go everywhere, and never get stuck in a rut again. Of course, offing a man in a car garage hadn’t been one of the things on her list to try.

Owen Walker spends every day in a new place with a new case. As one of the most renowned assassins in the world, he has his choice of marks—and he’s never failed in a mission. When a new hit takes him back to his hometown, he looks forward to spending time somewhere familiar. What he isn’t expecting is to help an attractive, confused American woman find out how she’s ended up on a hit man’s list.

As Ava and Owen dodge bullets, will they be able to escape their undeniable attraction to each other? Or will all of that chemistry blow up in a shower of hot and dangerous sparks?

I enjoy Nichole Chase’s writing! Her books are terrific ‘brain candy’. The Royals Series is a super fun read, so I was excited to get my hands on The Accidental Assassin. I was thrilled to find that it delivered exactly what I was expecting – sweet characters that are fun to read, entertaining scenes, heart-warming romance, and a little steam. The bonus in this book, was a little suspense just to keep it really interesting.

I really enjoyed Ava and Owen’s story. They’re two lonely souls who are really made for one another. They’re brought together in the unlikeliest of circumstance – a hit gone wrong. But, as they work together to unravel the mystery of just who is trying to kill whom, Ava and Owen can’t deny their attraction for one another. They’re surrounded by a cast of quirky and lovable characters. You’ll root for all of them to find love and happily-ever-after….if they survive!

Stop what you’re doing BFFs! This book is a must read, instant BFF Bestie! I just finished this weekend and I think I’m still in a book fog. It is so fantastic; an epic story of interwoven characters, spanning years, a few countries, countless pop culture references, heart-break, romance, incredible love, a little angst and moments that will make your heart plummet and soar. All of this set to the most amazing playlists.

This is the incredible story of characters and lives that are layered together and intertwined whether the characters know it or not. It is thoughtful, heartfelt, well-written and refreshing. The Album is the kind of book that leaves you savoring passages and re-reading highlights to embrace the characters just one more time.

In thinking about my review, I tried to decide which character I liked best or which scenes or lines I should highlight to share. I came to the conclusion that I simply LOVE it all. I adore all of the characters for the way that they’re uniquely and fully developed and shared on the page. I can’t identify one that I love more than the other, but the way it all comes together is nothing short of exquisite.

Has this ever happened to you: you’ve finished a book, but all you can do is think about it? Maybe you pick it up and re-read a few lines again? And you go about your regular day thinking about the characters in a really unhealthy way, like obsessively? And you want to get over the book, but you don’t want the experience to be over? So, you go online and obsessively look up information on the book and things related – like songs and quotes and mildly stalk the author? (Like in a fun fangirl way, not showing up on her front stoop kind of stalking….) Yeah, so that might be how I feel about The Album.

When I finished, I started frantically sending texts and messages encouraging all of my friends to buy and read this book. I want every one of my friends to have the shared experience of loving this book. Consider this a personal nudge from me to you…Read this book now! The Ballad releases on December 11 and you’ll be waiting to read it too!

(Rounds up to a 4)

I’m going to let you in on a (not so secret) secret. I’m sappy! I love romance, happily ever afters, puppies, kitties, hot cocoa, warm fuzzies, etc. AND, I love Christmas. As a natural result of this combo, I’m a total sucker for the Hallmark Channel, particularly the Christmas movies. I love them! I have seen most of them, several times. Unexpectedly Yours is like a sexed-up Hallmark Movie in book form. AND, I totally mean that as a compliment! <3

Sophie is sweet and slightly damaged with big hopes and expectations for a perfect Christmas in New York City. Austin is a rockstar on holiday looking for a little R&R who finds more than he ever expected in sweet, sincere and suddenly-available Sophie. When they’re together, Sophie can embrace a carefree spirit she rarely shows and Austin wants to make all of her holiday dreams come true. Can they last through Christmas and beyond?

Unexpectedly Yours is a fun little story that’s perfect for the season and worth a couple of hours on the couch, by the fire, wrapped in your favorite blanket with a cup of cocoa!

Review – Forked by Melanie Harlow

Twenty-eight year old Coco Thomas knows the recipe for disaster:

1) Agree to plan last-minute engagement blowout for spoiled Mafia princess before you realize her choice of caterer is Nick Lupo, a despicably gorgeous young chef with a hot new restaurant in town, a reality TV show victory, and a romantic past with you—one that did not end well.

2) Strike a deal with Nick in which you agree to spend a weekend with him in exchange for his services, under the strict conditions there will be no talking about the past, no second chances, and definitely no sex.

3) Violate all three conditions within 24 hours and spend two glorious days remembering what made you fall for the sexy, egotistical bastard in the first place, and why it hurt so much when he broke your heart.

Add one road trip, plenty of good scotch, and endless spoonfuls of chocolate cake batter drizzled over your body and licked off inch by oh-my-God-yes-right-there inch, then just admit it.

You’re totally FORKED.

BFF K’s Review

rating_4_80

Such a good book! Steamy, butterfly-inducing, second chance at love!

I love the way that Melanie Harlow writes female characters that I can relate to. They’re funny and flawed and very human. Coco is career oriented with big dreams, goals and ambitions. One of those goals is moving out of her parents house. She has an eye on her dream home, but the money will be tight. Enter the event that will help her swing the down payment and bring her face to face with the boy who broke her heart.
Nick Lupo is smoking hot, hard-working and successful. But, he’s broken Coco’s heart more than once, can she trust him again? Learning their shared history was a fun, sweet, walk down memory lane. I could quickly see all of the reasons that Coco loved Nick so deeply. And, getting to know Coco, you understand all of the reasons why Nick is drawn to her as well. BUT, can she get over her justifiable hurt and actually trust him again? I could understand all of Coco’s feelings and the emotions driving her decisions and actions.
The book is a terrific and builds to the perfect end where Nick pulls out all the stops to win back the love of his life! I really loved Frenched by Melanie Harlow. Lucas and Mia, the stars of Frenched, have a wonderful love story set in PARIS! Swoon. And, you’ll catch glimpses of Lucas and Mia (and her lists) – it’s like going to visit old friends!

Excerpt

“Spend the weekend with me.”

I shrank back. “Spend the weekend with you! Are you crazy? No!”

“Why not?” he asked, like it would be perfectly normal to spend a weekend with someone you hadn’t seen since he ditched you in the Bellagio bridal suite seven years ago.

“Because it’s ridiculous! I can’t even believe you’re asking me to…do that.” I gestured wildly between us, totally hot and bothered.

“Do what?”

“That.”

“I just want to spend time with you,” he said, his face the picture of innocence. “You’re the one who’s reading into it.”

I dropped my hands in my lap and cocked my head. “Really. You ask me to spend the weekend with you and you’re telling me you’re not thinking about sex?”

“Well, now that you mention it—”

“I’m not mentioning it. I’m vetoing it. Unequivocally.” I looked at the glasses on our wooden tray, desperate to find some drop of alcohol we’d overlooked. The absinthe was the only thing left, and even though it wasn’t my favorite, I took a less-than-advisable sized swallow. And then another, grimacing as the alcohol burned its way down my esophagus.

“What’s the problem?” he asked.

“You. Trying to get me in bed after all these years.”

“I’m not trying to get you in bed, Coco. I mean, I wouldn’t kick you out of it, but I was serious about wanting to spend time with you. Look.” He put his hands on the tops of my legs and leaned into me, the bastard. “I know you don’t really forgive me for leaving you in Vegas. And maybe you’re right—maybe getting married so young was a dumb idea, maybe it would have failed anyway, but leaving the way I did was wrong, and I’ve spent the last seven years feeling horrible about it. We spent all that time together, and I don’t even know you anymore. I’d like to know you again. As a human being. As a friend. That’s all.”

It was exactly what I’d been thinking earlier, but somehow it didn’t sound plausible coming from him. “This would be a little more convincing if your hands weren’t on my thighs.”

“But I like your thighs.”

My brain struggled to move beyond the feeling of his palms through the fabric of my dress. I had the crazy feeling that if I lifted my skirt I’d see his handprints burned into my skin. “Is this how you get to know all your female friends? Invite them to move in for a weekend?”

“Not all of them. Just the hot ones.”

“Funny.” He still thinks I’m hot. Warmth flooded my veins. I was starting to get that dangerous feeling, the one I get when I really, really want something, and no matter how impractical the shoe or fattening the cheesecake or expensive the scotch, I just can’t bring myself to walk away. How easy, how delightful it would be to jump back into his bed. But then what? Could I trust myself not to fall for him again?

Review – Frenched by Melanie Harlow

When Tucker Branch, playboy heir to Branch Bolt and Screw, screws and bolts a week before their wedding, Mia Devine wants nothing more than to crawl under her newly monogrammed sheets and plan a funeral for her dignity. But her friends convince her that bitter tastes better when it’s drowned in Bordeaux, so Mia grits her teeth and packs her bags, determined to make the best of her luxurious Paris honeymoon—alone.

She never planned on meeting Lucas Fournier.

The easygoing bartender’s scruffy good looks and less-than-sympathetic ear annoy her at first, but when she takes him up on his offer to show her around the city, she discovers that the romance of Paris isn’t just a myth.

Nor is the simultaneous O.

The last thing Mia needs is another doomed love affair, but since she only has a week, she figures she might as well enjoy la vie en O with Lucas while she can. But each day—and night—with Lucas is better than the last, and suddenly her heart is telling her this is more than a rebound fling.

Is it just the seduction of Paris…or could this be the real thing?

BFF K’s Review

rating_4_80

Mia is a list maker (I can relate). She’s a planner. Everything in her life is orderly, picture perfect. She’s an event planner and approaches her life with the same precision and detail that executes flawless events. So, being left at the alter is a serious blow her perfectly penciled existence. Her best friends convince her to take the honeymoon trip to Paris solo. Against her better judgement, she escapes to Paris.

Mia collides with Lucas and he sets out to convince her to stay in Paris, embrace the experience and enjoy herself. What comes next is a whirlwind tour of Paris and a love story that will make your heart beat fast and your toes curl! I suddenly have urges to plan a trip to Paris….

Is the cure for a breakup a hookup?

Marissa Duplei has one mission. Pick herself up, dust the ex off, and get dirty with someone else. However, sexy, inked-up, metal-musician Jack Storm is not the average girl’s revenge fling.

A tour bus bang.
A one night stand gone awry.
A secret to keep at all costs.

Could it all lead to love?

♪♫ Marissa ♫♪

Looking back, everything about that day was a perfect storm.

My bestfriend’s score of two VIP passes the day before the Hang Fest. A giant hurricane with a generous shot of alcohol. A sexy metal musician who was opposite of my cheating fiancé in every way.

The inked up muscled arms holding a tiny puppy protectively to his bare chest told me there was more to him than met the eye.

I had to know more.

I’ve always been practical. I know I wouldn’t have seen him again if I hadn’t rolled out of bed and stepped into the shower.

♪♫ Jack ♫♪

That’s true. A Perfect Storm.

There was the puppy my sister forced on me as an exercise in commitment.

And for damn sure, the cutoff shorts and tight sleeveless top she was wearing that day. The tan line well past the very short hem and way above the very low neckline of her tank top told me the packaging on this girl was deceptive.

I had to know more.
Much more.

It likely would have ended like every other hookup in that tour bus—if I hadn’t followed her into the shower afterward.

That shower was the beginning of us.

The point where we became more than a chance possibility. The part never told in countless interviews.

This was an introduction to a new author and a new Rockstar Romance Series. I was really intrigued by the synopsis for this book. I love the “super famous guy falls for an average girl” story. This book is definitely that, but it goes way beyond and to a few places I never expected. I really rooted for both Jack and Marissa. I want them to find their Happily Ever After. I love that Marissa really is an average girl. She’s kind and sweet and never takes advantage of Jack, though she could.

However, she was almost “too good.” There are things about Jack that she should have known. A simple Google search would have given her information that was actually really important, I was honestly bugged that she chose to stay uninformed about some really critical details that greatly impacted her life. The book did keep me turning the pages. I was anxious to know how it ended. I just wanted a little more.

So why this Marissa?

Why was she different?

I had no idea. I only knew I wanted to rock her world like it had never been shaken before. And I wanted to taste her… again…

I loved every sound she made, and I loved feeling her nails biting into my shoulders. She orgasmed with a melodic pitch, which cracked at the end of one long hum. I’d heard it enough in the last couple of hours now to be familiar with it, to fall for it. Her legs gelled, her weight falling to her palms on my shoulders.

Reflexively, I gripped her hips. Straightening, I quickly pulled her close, wanting to feel the pound of her heart and uneven breathing—wanting to experience the physiological effect I’d had on her, now that I’d heard the audible.

My hands slipped from her tits around to her backside, and remembering the quick glimpse of her ass, I spun her away for another look.

I could look at that view forever. Her arms were bent, palms to the faux tile pattern on the wall, and her head rested forward on the tiles. A totally submissive stance. And having this woman at my complete will turned me on like I hadn’t been in so long.

I received a copy of of Take the Cake (and Run) from the FABULOUS Daisy Prescott. And it is everything I hoped for! If you’ve read any of Daisy’s Modern Love Stories series, you’ll know that her writing is sharp, engaging and super funny! This story is no exception, it’s terrific. The only thing wrong with it – it’s too short!

John and Diane are newly engaged. Diane takes John into a delicate, girly, bakery to taste wedding cakes.

“If you’re going to continue to act like a giant bearded toddler about being here…”

So, you can guess how well this starts out…the ending is super cute and a little steamy!

I don’t want to give any more away, but I want you to know that John says a prayer in his head while he’s sitting at the table during the tasting that had me literally LOL!

So…….This book delivers exactly what it promises, in spades! Whew!

Have you ever highlighted or dog-eared a “certain scene” in one of your favorite reads? It’s OK, you don’t have to raise your hand. No need to publicly acknowledge this practice. (But, you’ve done it right? We all have!) Well, with this book, there’s no highlighting or bookmarks required. The entire book is a series of one steamy scene after another, lovingly curated, placed in one stunning package and tied up with a big, red bow!

Chances are, you’ll have the opportunity to re-visit a scene or two from one of your old favorites; but you’ll also get a glimpse into stories from a new book or author you haven’t had the chance to read yet! (Add about 10 more books to my TBR list!) I really liked the formatting of this anthology. Each scene is briefly set with back story, then you #SkipToTheGoodPart and finally finish up with a little more information about the book, the characters and the author.

Since we’re close to the holidays, I’ll compare this book to the delicious side dishes at your Thanksgiving feast. The stories are tasty, excellent in big portions or small bites, always good enough to nibble on again and they’re piping HOT!

Dig in and Enjoy!

This book was such a sweet surprise! I had no idea what to expect, but I LOVED every second of it! I read the entire book in a day. (That’s crazy fast for me and means I’m ignoring my family, eating only things that don’t require actual cooking and avoiding most forms of human interaction.) It was that good!

There were so many times during this book that I was literally Laughing Out Loud! There are only a handful of books that I can say really made me laugh and this book shoots to the top of that list. I want to see this made into a movie. Immediately. I can picture the scenes already.

Jason will make you swoon. Brooklyn will make you laugh. Cammie will make you long for a sister just like her! I want to live in this world with all of these characters as my BFF’s! I want re-read this sometime soon (it’s that good) and I can’t wait until Cammie and Grayson’s story releases Spring 2015!

About the Author:

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way, I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things… everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors include Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I’m a comedy geek and love all things “funny”. Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.

Review & Excerpt – The Redemption by S.L. Scott

theredemptiontourbannerfinal

He was everything she never wanted. Yet, she couldn’t stop thinking about him.

Soulful, amber eyes

A sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll reputation

A body that beckoned for sin

Three years ago Rochelle Floros was living her dream come true… then lost it all. On the worst day of her life, the last person she expected to be there for her was a rock star and tabloid favorite. Now, she’s trying to rebuild her life after the tragedy that destroyed her fairytale. Slowly, she found herself captivated by a sexy, bad boy drummer she had known for years.

Rochelle was caught between the grief that shrouded her heart and the charismatic man that made it race. What she didn’t know is if he was being sincere or toying with her heart. The Redemption is about finding the pulse of your soul in the most unlikely places and giving love a chance to grow.

Can what she wants really be what she needs? With his rhythm and her passion, can they make music together? Or will their harmony be lost forever?

BFF K’s Review

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I haven’t read The Resistance. It’s been on my Kindle for ages and I have intended to start it several times, but something else always comes up. (#bookbloggerproblems) I had every intention of reading it before The Redemption, but I just didn’t get it done, so I tested the “Part of a Series, but Can be Read as a Standalone” theory. For the most part, it was a success. Though, knowing that it was #2 in the series sometimes left me wondering what I had missed in book #1. I will be going back to find out sometime very soon!

I am used to my Rockstar Romances being a little lighter and funnier, so the angst in The Redemption caught me a little off guard. But, despite both of these ‘issues’ I still found myself reading late, late at night to see what would happen next between Rochelle and Dex.

Dex is a complicated man and he is surrounded by complex relationships and emotions. Rochelle has her own set of drama. AND, that doesn’t even account for the drama that inherently exists just between the two main characters! The book is a brooding, angst-filled journey to uncover if Dex and Rochelle can overcome all that stands in their way. Will they or won’t they, will they or won’t they?

I will reveal that there is one of the sweetest, dreamiest, love scenes in this book that I’ve ever read. You’ll never look at a greenhouse the same way again! <3 You’ll find a fair amount of angst, a good number of steamy scenes, a wonderful romance and a terrific happily ever after!

Excerpt:

I pull my hand away slowly, leaving all the feelings we were developing behind in

the palm of his hand. “The timing is wrong.”

“Bullshit!”

Startled, I jump in my seat.

Lowering his voice, he says, “That’s a cop out. I know you feel something for me.

I see how you react because I also feel it when I’m around you. There’s something here

and you’re just scared.”

“Scared of what?”

“Scared to have a life without Cory and thinking you have to justify it to others.

The problem with that is that when you start justifying it, it will make you feel like your

love for Cory was less. It wasn’t. It’s just different. He’s not here, Rochelle.”

“Stop it. Stop talking about Cory and take me home.”

“Now you want to stop talking about him?” He looks surprised. “I can’t win with

you when it comes to him.” He shifts the car into drive.

“This is not a competition, Dex.”

Disappointment slides onto his face. “Then why is he being shoved in my face

every time we make a move?”

“This is one of the reasons why we won’t work. We see things very differently.”

“One of the reasons? Name another because from where I sit, we fit like two

puzzle pieces clicking together.”

“You’re a supposed recovering addict. You have sex with anyone who offers.

“That’s it. Right there. You play like you know who I am, but you don’t. That’s

why the lies are so easily believed. I can tell what you’re doing. You’re giving me an out

that I don’t want. You’re allowing yourself to believe the worst about me to ease your

conscience, but it won’t—”

“You know what? Not everything is about you and your past. You lost a band

mate and friend, but I lost my soulmate!”
