BFF K’s Review of An Unforgivable Love Story

rating_4_80

I had the opportunity to meet BL Berry at the Scripted Social Book Signing this year in Des Moines, IA. She was so sweet and wonderful, I was looking forward to reading one of her books. When the opportunity to review this Audiobook came along, I jumped at the chance without knowing anything about the story. Was I in for a WILD ride?!?!

I’ve been thinking about this book for 2 days trying to decide what I think about it! I’ve concluded that this was a really good book with some VERY unexpected twists. There’s not much that I can say without giving away MAJOR plot points. But, know that this book has a seriously significant mind-f#$% and an unexpected villain (or two.) The fact that I’ve been thinking this book just shows that it’s got some staying power!

I enjoyed the audio, especially the last 40%. I’ll admit, in the beginning, I was annoyed with the narrator. The first character sounded a little breathy and the inflection bothered me a bit. I couldn’t understand the reasoning behind the characterization. But, one of the twists proved why this was necessary. While I still didn’t love the vocal choice, I understood it. And, the story is strong enough to pull the listener through a rough audio issue or two.

If you’re looking for a book that will knock you to your knees and make you feel love and hate and hate and hope (and maybe a little more hate) An Unforgivable Love Story is a great choice! Cheers to B.L. Berry for a really surprising and enjoyable story!

Review – Politically Incorrect by Jeanne McDonald

Young couple flirting with legs at the restaurant under the tableRelease Date: August 16, 2016

Sex. Lies. Greed. Power. Scandal. Politics.

Political strategist, Elizabeth McNeal has been called a lot of things throughout her career—bitch being at the top of the list—but she doesn’t let it get to her. She’s bold, she’s blunt, and she takes orders from no one. This is how she’s survived working in a man’s world. She’s the master of diversion, and her specialty is winning an election—no matter the cost.

That is, until she meets her new client, Democratic candidate, Congressman William Baxter. Kind, considerate, insanely handsome, honest, and ten years her junior, he’s a unicorn among politicians. He infuriates her. He challenges her. Most of all, he makes her see past the scandalous world of politics and helps her to discover the heart of the woman inside her.

With sparks flying between them and the election rapidly approaching, the last thing either of them need is to be caught in a compromising position. Some lines are meant to be crossed and some rules broken, but for Elizabeth and Liam is it worth the cost of being politically incorrect?

BFF K’s Review of Politically Incorrect

rating_4_80

I’m a sucker for a political romance and this one delivers a powerful storyline that is sure to please the pickiest pundit. (sorry, I couldn’t resist that alliteration!)

Elizabeth McNeal is the real deal! She’s a strong, smart, savvy political operative that knows the best moves to make to make sure her clients come out on the winning side of every race. When she meets William (Liam) Baxter, politics are no longer the most important thing in her life. William is that rare politician who speaks with honesty, means what he says, and truly wants to make the country better. (I long for a real life Liam Baxter!) Elizabeth wants to help him win a coveted spot in the US Senate; but she is pretty sure she wants to win the spot warming up his bed just as badly. Their immediate and undeniable attraction creates some fabulous angst-filled moments. Elizabeth is also a few years older than Liam. This fact bothers her much more than it does Liam, but it’s part of what leads to the angst that drives the storyline. The story is packed full of drama and some interesting characters, making you wonder “who can be trusted in the political-snakes-den?”

Politically Incorrect is a quick read, full of interesting plotlines and intriguing characters. There are also more than a couple of super steamy scenes to deliver all the feels! If you’re a fan of Political Romance, this should be a definite one-click release for you!

Natalie can’t sing. Or dance. Or play an instrument. She can’t ride a bike and doesn’t know how to swim or drive. As a result, her husband often asks “Are you sure you’re not really from Mars?” (the answer, in case you were wondering, is no. Unless New York counts as another planet). Review – The Marrying Type by Laura Chapman

Always the wedding planner, never a bride, Elliot Lynch is famous for orchestrating the splashiest weddings in Charleston, South Carolina. When her father’s sloppy management practices leave them on the brink of bankruptcy, Elliot will do whatever it takes to save the family business. When asked to appear on “The Marrying Type,” a reality TV show about the people behind the scenes as couples exchange I dos, she says yes to the invasion of privacy (and the hefty paycheck that comes with it).

With a camera crew capturing every detail of her life, Elliot faces her most challenging contract yet: planning a wedding where her ex is involved in every part of the process. Add in a lazy assistant, liquor-loving bridesmaid, and rival planner encroaching on her turf, and Elliot’s wedding season goes from high-end to high-stress.

Forced to confront her past, Elliot must live out her troubled present on national TV if she has any hope of saving her future.

BFF K’s Review of The Marrying Type

rating_4_80

The Marrying Type delivers just what you expect from the synopsis. It is a straight-forward, sweet, storyline that delivers a fun read and a satisfying conclusion. I listened to the book on audio and enjoyed it very much. (The narrator can get a bit nasally, but it didn’t interfere with my overall enjoyment of the story.)

Elliot Lynch is in a predicament. She needs a quick solution to save her family’s business and keep her life on track. When she ends up planning the wedding of her ex’s sister, while filming a reality TV show at the same time, there are bound to be additional complications. Enter Eric-the-Ex. He’s all of the wonderful things that Elliot remembers and it’s becoming harder and harder to deny their feelings for one another. Suddenly the things that pulled them apart years ago don’t seem as daunting.

This charming story has a great mix of two fun settings: wedding planning and reality TV. Add a dash of 2nd chance love and you have The Marrying Type. This is just a lovely romance with little to no steamy times, but it’s full of quirky characters and lots of heart! I look forward to more books from this author!

Audio Review – Shopping for a Billionaire by Julia Kent

When mystery shopper Shannon Jacoby meets billionaire Declan McCormick with her hand down a toilet in the men’s room of one of his stores, it’s love at first flush in this hilarious new romantic comedy from New York Times best-selling author Julia Kent.

This novella originally appeared in A Sweet Life boxed set (all proceeds donated to diabetes research), so if you bought that boxed set you already own this! If you didn’t buy that boxed set, here’s your chance to read or listen to this series.

BFF K’s Review of Shopping for a Billionaire #1

rating_4_80

Shopping for a Billionaire is a delightfully fun romp! The Shopping for a Billionaire series is a set of mini-novels that take you on a fast and furious adventures that are absolutely hilarious! When Shannon meets Declan in this ‘episode’ I had to pause the audio to allow for laugh breaks. Their bathroom encounter made my sides hurt from laughing.

All humor aside, the heart of this story is a hard-working, smart, witty, heroine who is caught off guard by the epitome of “tall, dark and handsome!” I’m anxious to know what comes next for this burgeoning super couple.

I enjoyed the performance and the narration so much that I immediately purchased the audio for #2 and look forward to diving in! If you’re looking for a light, quick, LOL-funny, audio-adventure, this is one to add to your Audible queue. (Or your Kindle if you prefer!)

THE STRONGEST STEEL by Scarlett Cole

Book Blurb:
“An incredible story about healing, pain, and trust…you don’t want to miss this one!” –New York Times bestselling author Jen McLaughlin

“I know what you’re up to,” she said.
“And what would that be?” he asked with a devious smirk.
“You know.”
“Is it working?”
She looked over her shoulder to where he was still reclining against the wall, watching her patiently. All the reasons she’d vowed to stay alone, to remain uninvolved, fled as he grinned at her.
“Maybe.”

In Scarlett Cole’s The Strongest Steel, Harper Connelly never expected to find herself outside of a tattoo parlor at one in the morning. The scars that decorate her back are just one more reminder of things she’d rather forget, the past she wants to leave far behind her, but before she can move on, she needs him.

Trent Andrews has his own reasons for specializing in inking over scars. And there’s no way in hell he’s going to turn Harper away. Not when a swirling mix of tenderness and desire slams into him every time he sees her. Being with Harper is like going ten rounds in the ring―exhilarating, powerful, and dangerous. She stirs feelings in him he thought were long gone… if he can only get past her carefully constructed defenses.

Running was the only thing that saved Harper last time, but each session at Second Circle Tattoos brings her closer and closer to Trent. His lingering touches seduce her, making her believe in a life without fear, where she can be happy, whole, in love. But when cryptic messages start appearing on Harper’s phone, strange deliveries arrive at her door, and Second Circle is vandalized, Harper is convinced that her ex-boyfriend has tracked her down, and worse, that he knows about Trent. She ran from her past once before; this time will she have the strength to fight back?

“This book gave me so many feels! Angst, passion, and love all set in Miami, my favorite city. I can’t wait for more from this author and I can’t recommend this book enough.” – Sidney Halston,USA Today bestselling author of Against the Cage

Music Notes_Amazon (1)

Sing.

That’s what I came to do.

I was prepared to do just that until I walked into my audition and saw him. Tall, mysterious, and gorgeous to boot, he was sitting at the coaches’ table with three others, ready to judge my performance, and decide my future. Yet, since I’d walked onto the stage, he continued to look at anything but me. So, I did the one thing I was there to do: sing. When I opened my mouth and let those words spill from my lips, he finally looked up. Those startling, dark eyes collided with mine with such intensity that I knew one thing for certain: I would never be the same.

I am Layne Carter, newest contestant on Rising Star, the biggest singing competition on reality television. Nothing can stop me from giving this show my all. Not my horrible diva roommate. Not the fact that I’m terribly homesick and miss my family. And certainly not my uncontrollable growing attraction to my coach, Beau Tanner, award winning country superstar. Nothing will stand in my way.

And I’m wrong.

BFF K’s Review of Music Notes

rating_4_80

If you like American Idol or The Voice, you’re going to love Music Notes! This is the book version of your best imaginary scenarios. Layne is a contestant on the Rising Star and has the chance to change her life if she can come away the victor of this competition. But, what she doesn’t take into account is her attraction to Beau Tanner, country music sensation and her coach!

Layne and Beau have an intense attraction. It’s fun seeing Layne try to balance that attraction and her opportunity to make it big. There are several road blocks standing in their way. Much of the book is filled with the tension of trying to figure out which obstacle will be their biggest and how they’ll overcome it. The two share a sweet romance and some absolutely butterfly-inducing, swoon-worthy moments. Layne is a great heroine and Beau is super-sweet trying to prove himself worthy of her.

There’s a surprise about 3/4 of the way through. The book allows you, the reader, to play a role in the outcome of their story. It was a fun and unexpected treat. Music Notes is an entertaining read with engaging characters, a fun premise and compelling plot twist. You won’t be disappointed if you one-click this enjoyable new release.

Review – Built by Jay Crownover

Sometimes a real hero lets you save yourself . . .

Sayer Cole and Zeb Fuller couldn’t be more different. She’s country club and fine-dining, he’s cell-block and sawdust. Sayer spends her days in litigation while Zeb spends his working with his hands. But none of that has stopped Zeb from wanting the stunning blonde since the moment he laid eyes on her—even if the reserved lawyer seems determinedly oblivious to his interest.

Sayer is certain the rough, hard, hot-as-hell Zeb could never want someone as closed off and restrained as she is, which is a shame because something tells her he might be the guy to finally melt her icy exterior. When he shows up at Sayer’s door needing her professional help, she’s both disappointed and relieved that she won’t get the chance to find out just how good he could be.

But as they team up to right a wrong and save a family, the steam created when fire and ice collide cannot be ignored.

BFF K’s Review of Built

rating_4.5

Are you looking for a bold, bearded, tattooed, reformed, sensitive, alpha Book Boyfriend? You need to meet Zeb! He is all of those things and so much more. When he finds himself faced with a circumstance that would send most people running in the opposite direction; he steps up and embraces his situation in a way that you wish everyone would. Through all of the changes in his life, Zeb has a bone-deep belief that Sayer is meant to be with him. He’s not intimidated or cowed by the fact that she’s smart, well-educated and independent. He finds her personal strength appealing and helps to uncover a softer side to her personality. Zeb loves every part of her.

Sayer is a strong female character who is almost strong to a fault. She’s so determined to take care of things on her own that she doesn’t want to be vulnerable and let Zeb into her life. Her process of growth and self-awareness is an interesting journey. She has a growing circle of friends and family. Sayer is accepting of people and has a strong desire to help and support those she loves.

When Zeb and Sayer finally come together, the chemistry is explosive. (I may never look at a freshly painted wall the same way again!)

Ahhhh, I’m in love with the new Saints of Denver series by Jay Crownover! I can’t wait for more. A couple of additional notes: I did a combo read/listen and the audio format of this book is outstanding. I own most of Jay Crownover’s Marked Men series. Though I know I will love them, I’ve never had time to get through the entire series. Even though the Saints of Denver is a spin off of that Marked Men series, I’m proof that you don’t have to read the first to thoroughly enjoy the new series and characters. Built is a really solid choice for an outstanding, steamy, contemporary romance. It’s a definite one-click recommendation!

Excerpt

Taking my hands in his, Beau slows down the noise and helps drum a steady beat. Suddenly we’ve gone from hard and rockin’ to slow and seductive. His hands are hot wrapped around mine, and I feel his warm breath tickling my ear as he slowly hypnotizes me with each inhale and exhale. An uncontrollable shiver rips through my body, but it has nothing to do with the coolness of the room and everything to do with this man and the way he touches me.

We play in unison for several minutes, playing a song that I’m not familiar with. Hell, for all I know, Beau is making it up as we go. All I know is that I’m entranced with the music, the steady tapping of the drums, and the one-hundred percent all-man hottie with his arms wrapped around me.

Shivers rip through my body like a tornado and goose bumps pepper my skin when Beau gently brushes his lips against the back of my neck. “You smell like heaven. It’s a little bit of something floral wrapped in sweetness. Like tulips dipped in sugar. It makes me want to lick this part of your neck,” he says as he runs his tongue down my neck and toward my collarbone. “And suck on ya. Right. Here,” Beau says, punctuating each word by gently sucking open-mouthed on my tingly skin.

“You can’t say that to me,” I whisper without conviction, finding it difficult to speak with my suddenly too thick tongue.

“Why not?” he whispers against my flushed skin.

“Because it makes me want more. And I can’t have more,” I reply with a groan. My body is fully charged, a live wire of electricity, with no relief in sight.

“Yet, Layne. We can’t have more yet. I promise you that as soon as this show is finished, I will know what the rest of your skin tastes like. I am going to savor every inch of your delectable body. I am going to kiss every part of you as I strip you naked, and then I am going to do things to you–every single one of the wicked things I’ve fantasized about–until you are screaming my name and left satisfied and boneless. And then I’m going to do them all over again. Why? Because one time isn’t going to be nearly enough with you. I might need days. Weeks. Fuck, I might need to spend the rest of my life consumed by you. Only you.”

Five years ago, Josie Fairmore left timber country in search of a bright future. Now she’s back home with a mountain of debt and reeling from a loss that haunts her. Desperate for a job, she turns to the one man she wishes she could avoid. The man who rocked her world one wild night and then walked right out of it.

Former Marine Noah Tager is managing his dad’s bar and holding tight to the feeling that his time overseas led to failure. The members of his small town think he’s a war hero, but after everything he’s witnessed, Noah doesn’t want a pat on the back. The only thing he desires is a second chance with his best friend’s little sister.

Josie’s determined to hold onto her heart and not repeat her mistakes, but when danger arrives on Noah’s doorstep and takes aim at Josie, they just might discover that sometimes love is worth the risk.

The minute I finished Running Wild, the prequel novel to Serving Trouble, I went in search of the continuation of Josie and Noah’s story. (If you haven’t read Running Wild, you should go download and read that immediately!) I was drawn to Josie and Noah. I like the “Siblings BFF” trope and this one sets up beautifully.

Josie has a less than stellar reputation around her small town and she was anxious to break free of the confines and people’s perceptions. Noah is the hometown hero; a High School football star turned war veteran who has returned to take over the family business, Buck’s Bar. Oh yeah, he is also Josie’s brother’s best friend. Outside of one wild night just before Noah left for the service, (Running Wild) they have kept their distance despite a mutual attraction and shared affection. Noah is working behind the bar when Josie rolls into town desperate for a job. It doesn’t take long for the two to give in to their mutual attraction and overwhelming physical and emotional needs for one another.

Sara Jane Stone has woven a tale full of both romance and suspense. Josie and Noah are rich and complex characters. When they are threatened by an unknown source, both Josie and Noah must fight to stay together and safe. Both characters are independent and strong, but they want to share life’s struggles and to be a support for one another.

This was my first novel by Sara Jane Stone and I’m anxious for more in this Second Shot Series. I read Serving Trouble on a road trip and was so consumed by the story and the characters that miles and hours passed in the blink of an eye. There’s just enough mystery to keep the pages turning and more than enough steam to keep it interesting. If you’re looking for a solid romance with great characters and an engrossing story, Serving Trouble is a solid choice!
