New Release – Love Her by Andrea Johnston

Love Her

Military Men of Lexington #3

Release Date: 7/23/2020

Genre: Contemporary; Small town; Single mom; Ex-military;

Slow burn; Redemption of the bad girl

Felicity

The day I left that small town behind, I swore I’d never be back. I was better than Lexington and its small-minded residents. No one bothered to look beyond the mask I wore to protect my heart.

Then or now.

Sometimes life doesn’t turn out the way we plan. Having kids was the best thing that I ever did. Returning to the one place I’m least welcome might be the most humiliating. The one thing about this town is a reputation follows you. So despite life humbling me, this town won’t forgive easily, and my past bad deeds still haunt me.

Connor

Running from one war to another in the military, I spent years trying to find what was meant for me, to figure out where I belonged. It wasn’t in the city where I grew up or overseas. My soul needed settling and Lexington seemed like a good place to be alone.

Then I met her.

She owned my attention from the moment I saw her, my heart right after. Through the grapevine, I learned Felicity had a past worth gossiping about. So do I. Maybe that’s why I’m drawn to her.

I moved here for a fresh start, a second chance to live a peaceful life, but she has me reevaluating that plan. Maybe it’s not peace I need but love that I’ve been missing all along.

Excerpt

He moves with assurance, every step taken with purpose. When I met him, he oozed confidence, but I discovered that he didn’t know who he was. It was as if his mother’s death had caused him to lose track of himself. He made me feel safe and secure, taken care of, and loved. He was never unsteady around me. But I would catch him lost in his own thoughts when he assumed I was studying. I remember a night when music played softly in the background, a fire flamed in the fireplace, my books were scattered on the coffee table, and his room was dim with the heaviness of his mood, he stood in the open doorway that led to the balcony. The anguish seemed to cover him like a cloak, his shoulders sagging and his head seeming too cumbersome to hold up. Alexander leaned against the railing and closed his eyes . . .

“Kingwood Enterprises is the only thing left of my mother.”

“You’re left of her.”

“No.” He laughed, looking up at the night sky. “I’m all bad, just like my dad.” Glancing over his shoulder back at me, he sighed. “When are you going to see the real me, Sara Jane?”

“I see the real you every time I see you. This is who you are. I don’t know why you think you’re so bad when all I see is the good.”

With a smile on his face, he turns around, and crosses his arms over his chest. “You’re the smartest decision I ever made. You know that?”

“Yes,” I say, feeling sassy. “Now come and kiss me.”

“You’re so demanding when you get compliments.”

“You like it.”

Hopping over the arm of the couch, he lands with a thud next to me sending my textbooks to the floor. “I do like it. A lot.”

That was a good kiss. A kiss that went from chaste to more in seconds. I still remember it so clearly.

Alexander may not have known who he was at the time, but he knew who he was going to be. I often wonder if it was a self-fulfilling prophecy or falling into a trap set long before he was born. There are a lot of ghosts haunting this manor and I don’t intend to let him be the next.

Tonight, his secrets are protected by a solid wave of muscle that rolls over broad shoulders, crashing down strong arms. I turn over to get a better look at him before he disappears outside. He’s been working out a lot more lately. He says it’s to get rid of pent-up energy. I think it might be preparing for battle.

To: LilyNBlack@gmail.com

Subject: Justin Timberlake Nudes!Lily, you predictable perv. I knew you’d open this email faster if I tempted you with a glimpse of JT’s “PP”. Well, put your pants back on and grab some bubbly because I have much better news to share.

I GOT A JOB!

As of tomorrow, I’ll be the new executive assistant at Lorena Lefray Designs. I am SO excited, but there’s one itty bitty problem: I won’t be Lorena’s assistant. I’ll be working for her older brother, Julian.

I know what you’re thinking- “But Jo, what’s the problem?”

Google him. Now. He’s the man in the fitted navy suit whose face reminds you that there’s hope yet for this cruel, ugly world. Keep scrolling…Do you see those dimples? Yup. That’s the Julian Lefray I will be reporting to tomorrow morning.

BFF K’s Review

rating_4.5

This book is R.S. Grey doing what she does best, delivering a sweet romantic comedy with fun characters and story lines that is laugh out loud funny! The Allure of Julian Lefray is a quick read that is packed full of fun and romance. You’ll find yourself under the Allure of Julian just as quickly as Josephine. The setting of the book – New York fashion – is fun and fresh. Jo is a fantastic character, I loved getting to see her struggles and successes. Julian is a certifiable hottie with the smarts, charisma and sweetness to make him irresistible.

It’s easy to see why Jo and Julian fall for one another and watching them struggle to keep one another at arms length is a fun ride. But, watching them find one another is even better. The characters are really well developed and there is a supporting cast that I absolutely LOVED! In fact, I’m hoping-hoping-hoping that Lily and Dean will get their own book!

Did I mention it’s FUNNY? Just two phrases for you: sex dungeon and old-people-orgy.

OMG, I’m wiping away more tears, just thinking about it. So. Good.

One-Click this one TODAY, you’ll be so happy you did!

About the Author

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way, I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things… everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors include Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I’m a comedy geek and love all things “funny”. Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.

“That’s What She Said”

An Author Interview with Ashley Pullo for the BFF Book Blog

BFF K: I love the writing style for The Album. It’s so fresh and unique. Each chapter is from the POV of a different character, but…there are a few chapters from a 3rd person perspective. How did you decide which chapters to change your style? Why did you make that decision?

AP: Honestly, I was cleaning the bathroom with bleach when I realized the only way this would work is if the stories within the story each had a narrative voice. Admittedly, it was a writing challenge, but one that ended up being very rewarding. The third-person snippets are a technique I borrowed from Balzac – invite the reader into the scene and he/she will experience the journey as it unfolds.

_______________

BFF K: Did you have all of those 90’s pop culture references in your head or did you have to research them?

AP: Yes! My random knowledge is filed nicely and color-coded in my head. Lyrics from a dozen songs, the prices from a Taco Bell menu in 1995, relevant movies, Nickelodeon, the roller rink, Contempo Casuals, and Mario Lopez.

_______________

BFF K: Are you a current pop culture junkie too, or just a 90’s-early 2000’s specialist?

AP: I appreciate the decades in which I’m not only directly influenced by the popular culture, but also the cultural references that create a sense of nostalgia. One of the purest human emotions is memory. And the best way to make the past tangible is to have things like art, music, entertainment, fashion, and materials reflect specific moments from our lives.

Oh yeah, pop-culture today is lame. It’s more about trends and scandals – a culture of technology and fear. I’m scared that my children will never understand what it feels like to listen to a record/tape, stand in line for concert tickets, save money for purple Doc Martens, eventually get to said concert to enjoy a night of lasting memories. It’s a shame.

_______________

BFF K: The characters in The Album collect vinyl records that remind them of events, times and places. I LOVE this idea! Is this something you do or how did you come up with this idea?

AP: I wish I had a vinyl collection! The records were a random idea that aided in linking the characters together.

________________

BFF K: Are you fluent in French? The bits of the book with French were so lovely, how did those happen?

AP: Je parle français. One of the themes in The Album is the idea of perception. I wanted the characters to have distinct geographical traits, but also ignore the stereotypes often seen in movies or television. Zach only speaks French when necessary – as do I.

________________

BFF K: Maybe I missed this, but I don’t think that Chris revealed to Natalie his relationship with Zach. Is there or will there be a scene where this happens?

 AP: Wow! See next question.

________________

BFF K: I love how these characters are connected in ways they know and in ways they don’t know. What was your inspiration or thought process behind the interwoven lives and experiences of the characters?

AP: This is by far the most interesting question!

The inspiration came from a conversation my husband (then boyfriend) had about our separate trips to Italy. We discovered we were in Rome at the same time, years before we actually met. I’ve held on to that “random” idea for almost fifteen years…

And then I thought, wouldn’t it be brilliant to have the reader discover the connections. Allow the reader to decide if things were discussed “off-screen”. Let the reader act as an additional narrator!

Chris and Zach only knew each other as Ace and Frenchy. Adam never saw the girls outside the Tim Horton’s. Chloe never discovers the connection between Adam and Nat. Mr. Parker is simply a client. Pete’s sweatpants.

And trust me, there are a few more surprising connections that reappear in The Ballad. {insert winky face}

_______________

BFF K: Obviously, music is like a character in the book and I LOVE the Spotify playlists! Is music also a character in your life? Did you listen to these playlists while you were writing? Can I share the links?

AP: I’m a character writer. Part of developing a rich, fictional person is to give them a personality. All the songs chosen for the playlist and/or referenced in the novel are specific to their personality. I admit, there are some songs I don’t actually like, but this isn’t my playlist of Jams – it belongs to the five.

________________

BFF K: Are you a full-time author? What are you plans for future projects?

AP: I’m a full-time author and a part-time television junkie. I take both jobs very seriously.

Next up is my debut Young Adult novel, The Brat Pack! It’s like a genre all on its own – Urban Fantasy/Humor/Satire/Romance/Para-YA/Mosh Pit.  I can’t reveal too much, but I promise it’s true to my style of writing. Five strong characters, humor and heartache, and most definitely, pop-culture galore.

________________

BFF K: So, you were voted most witty at Garland High School. Any other prestigious recognitions we should know about?

AP: Sadly, no. Can you give me a fake award?
